System Update and Initial Setup
Step 1: All-in-One Command
You can run all of these in sequence:
apt update && apt upgrade -y && apt full-upgrade -y && apt autoremove -y && apt clean
- update: This fetches the latest package information from Ubuntu’s repositories.
- upgrade: Download and install all available updates
- full-upgrade:
- Can remove obsolete packages
- Handles dependency changes better
- More thorough than basic upgrade
- autoremove: Cleans up packages that were installed as dependencies but are no longer needed.
- clean: Frees up disk space by removing downloaded package files.
Step 2: Check if Reboot is Needed
After updates, check if a reboot is required:
[ -f /var/run/reboot-required ] && echo "Reboot required" || echo "No reboot needed"
If Reboot is Required:
reboot
Your SSH connection will drop. Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect:
ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP
Verify System Info
After reboot (if needed), check your system:
uname -a
Shows kernel version and system info.
lsb_release -a
Confirms Ubuntu version (should show 24.04).
df -h
Shows disk usage (you should see plenty of free space on your 160GB).
Step 3: install Fast-Fetch
# Download the latest release for Linux amd64
wget https://github.com/fastfetch-cli/fastfetch/releases/latest/download/fastfetch-linux-amd64.deb
# Install the .deb package
apt install ./fastfetch-linux-amd64.deb -y
# Clean up the downloaded file
rm fastfetch-linux-amd64.deb
Test It
fastfetch
Auto-run on Login (Optional)
echo "fastfetch" >> ~/.bashrc
